Identification

Identity is established if the notary personally knows the signer or if the notary is presented with satisfactory evidence of the signer's identity.

Personal knowledge...

For a notary public to state that he or she personally knows an individual, the notary must have an association with that individual prior to the notarization of the individual's signature and must have had a chain of acquaintances with the individual to deem with reasonable certainty that the individual is who he or she claims to be.

Satisfactory evidence...

Evidence of identity can be established by presentation to the notary of paper identification documents. Any one of the following documents, provided that the identification document is current or has been issued within five years is acceptable:

  1. An identification card or driver's license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles

  2. A United States passport

  3. Other State-approved identification card, consisting of any one of the following, provided that it also contains a photograph, description of the person, signature of the person, and an identifying number:

    1. A passport issued by a foreign government, provided that it has been stamped by the U.S. Immigration or Naturalization Service or the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

    2. A driver's license issued by another state or by a Canadian or Mexican public agency authorized to issue drivers' licenses

    3. An identification card issued by another state

    4. A military identification card

    5. An inmate identification card issued by California Department of Corrections, if the inmate is in custody

Prior to your appointment...

Please be certain of the following:

  1. The identification document you will be using to prove your identity is one the above and is not expired. The document must be an original and not a photocopy.

  2. The document to be notarized is complete. If there are blanks in the document, please fill them in prior to your appointment. If you have questions about how to complete the document, contact the person who drafted or requested the document.

  3. Signer must be able to communicate with the notary public. If you are a non-English speaking individual who does not fluently speak English, please find a notary who speaks your language.
